Iranian authorities have arrested one of the country's most famous actresses after she expressed solidarity with anti-government demonstrators.

Tarane Alidousti — one of the most successful actresses in Iran. She starred in the Oscar winning movie "The Salesman" in 2016 as the best international feature film.

In an Instagram post last week, she condemned the execution of a man for his part in the protests.

In her post, the 38-year-old actress criticized some international organizations for not speaking out against the execution of Mohsen Shekari.

Authorities hanged him after they accused him of being a “rebel” who blocked a main road in Tehran in September and wounded a paramilitary member with a machete.

"His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organization that watches this bloodshed and does not take any action is a disgrace to humanity”, — she wrote.

According to state media, Tarane Alidusti was detained on charges of “spreading lies.” about the protest movement that has swept the country.

According to the Telegram account of the state news agency IRNA, she was arrested by the police for failing to provide “any documents consistent with her claims.”

Since the start of the protest movement, Alidousti has been openly critical of the Iranian government's efforts to quell the nationwide unrest sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained by police in September.
