During excavations in the ruins of a palace in the city of Yueyang, researchers from the Institute of Archeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences were surprised to find an ancient plumbing fixture. It used to be believed that flush toilets were invented in England.
In addition to the toilet, various broken parts and a pipe leading to an outdoor cesspool were found at the site. The luxury item was likely used by high-ranking officials, excavation team member Liu Rui told China Daily. from the Warring States period to the beginning of the Han Dynasty.
Researchers have found that servants poured water into the cistern of a plumbing fixture, and the pipe they found was a drain.
