Immunologist: “Omicron may be hastening the end of the pandemic”

Israeli immunologist at Bar Ilan University, Professor Cyril Cohen, said in an interview with Ynet that the new Omicron coronavirus strain could possibly accelerate the end of the pandemic.

The professor noted that a strain that can bring the end of the pandemic closer should not cause a severe form of the disease, in addition, such a strain should have a “ sufficiently strong immune response '' in humans.

“Perhaps Omicron fits these criteria, but it takes time to answer this question. I would not say that Omicron marks the end of the pandemic, but it may be accelerating its end, '' said Cyril Cohen.

Separately, the professor emphasized that one should be careful in assessing, because at the very beginning the Delta strain was considered less dangerous than the Alpha strain.
