 How the thirst for knowledge awakens

Do you know what I think about when I return home with ultra-Orthodox families from London, New York or Brussels? The fact that these people, outwardly no different from their relatives in Bnei Brak and Jerusalem, are firmly on their feet, are considered the best programmers, businessmen, stone cutters. And they did not achieve all this thanks to scholarships in yeshivas and kollels and allowances for large families.

Once upon a time, during the epic, now almost ancient, Netanyahu pretty much cut these benefits – and the Haredim began to massively enter the labor market. Then the interests of his main coalition partners – Shas and Ya'adut HaTorah – became much closer to him, and everything returned to normal.

Demographic calculations for the next 20-30 years are the most depressing. The ultra-Orthodox population is growing rapidly, half of the men in it do not work, it is difficult for those who decide to get a job, and they earn little – Haredim are uncompetitive in the labor market: who needs an employee in modern production or in an office who does not own a computer, does not know with English, who did not study mathematics? They can apply for the simplest job with the lowest salary – it is more profitable to sit on scholarships and benefits. But the secular population cannot feed this rapidly growing sector.

The whole reason is the lack of a basic education among a large part of the Haredim. The conclusion suggests itself from the old anecdote: “Monya does not need to be sniffed, Monya needs to be taught.”

The departure of Deri and Litzman from politics, and the very small chances of Bibi's return, have significantly weakened the positions of religious parties. There is nothing to blackmail, so the most flexible Haredi leaders are ready for dialogue and compromise. There is no one in particular to blackmail them in the current government.

Why are our websites and social networks so vigorously discussing the readiness of Admor of the Belzian Rabbis Issachar Dov Rokeah to cooperate with the Ministry of Education? In the religious school system of the Belz community, neither Hebrew, nor foreign languages, nor other secular and exact disciplines are taught. This system does not even belong to the religious, patronized by the state.

But the Belz yard, the second largest after the Gur one, has 9,000 boys. There is not much money for education now, and negotiations involve a serious increase in budgetary allocations in exchange for teaching basic subjects. Ideally, a system of tests and examinations would be required, on which the amount of funding from the budget would depend.

I am not flattering myself about the Belz Hasidim, but their admor is considered a subtle diplomat, a brilliant administrator and a bold reformer. Especially when the money runs out. This is not “a quiet revolution in the ultra-Orthodox sector,” as bold commentators hastened to call it. It's just that the most intelligent and perspicacious do not wait for the weather by the sea, but try to save themselves. If a transparent control scheme is worked out, our plans will coincide.

Belz Hasidim, and you are not too lazy to ask for more details – very interesting and pragmatic movement. At first, in Israel, it boycotted the Agudat Yisrael party. for her contacts with the Zionists, and when they saw the economic benefits, they gladly joined. Recently in North London, by a special halachic decree, they allowed their women to take their children to schools. And even walk on both sides of the sidewalk, and not on one specific one, as we have in Beit Shemesh. The English public poked at them a little.

These “Hasidic liberals” even wigs made of goy hair are not forbidden.

I believe that if the government shows firmness, then the exact sciences will soon be studied in other religious schools without bags.

Let's teach Monya, Nozdrevsky method “Don't give them oats to their horses!” does not work. But oats are now expensive, let them work out, gnawing at the granite of science.
