High-profile case: after almost 30 years, a woman's killer was sentenced

On Sunday, 67-year-old Valery Sakovich was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of a woman in 1993. The case was solved thanks to DNA analysis, according to the Times of Israel.

Sakovich confessed to the murder of 27-year-old Vardit Bekerknotiz Kiryat Anavim. Her body was found in the woods near Beit Shemesh.

Sakovich reportedly signed a plea deal. The sexual offense originally on the indictment was dropped from the conviction as part of the deal.

The court also ordered the man to pay compensation in the amount of 258,000 shekels. But, as noted, Sakovich is unlikely to be able to do this, given his financial situation.

According to the materials of the investigation, Sakovich took Beckerknot, then a student, while she was hitchhiking home. On the way, he turned onto a dirt road and then into the woods. The man hit the girl on the head, chest, stomach, and also raped her. After that, Sakovich strangled the victim until she died. The defendant then dragged the body away and hid it.
