Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, winner of the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature, will continue his collaboration with streaming giant Netflix. This was reported by Deadline.
The new project will be another adaptation of the classic gothic novel “Frankenstein” Mary Shelley (1818), which became one of the favorite plots of horror makers in the 20th century. The project is currently at the scripting stage.
Oscar Isaac (Dune), Andrew Garfield (Under Silver Lake) and Mia Goth (Suspiria) will star in Del Toro's new film. How the roles are distributed is not yet known, but Isaac will presumably play the doctor, and Goth – his beloved. It remains to be seen who Garfield will get: the monster or the role of Frankenstein's assistant named Igor.
The director has repeatedly admitted in interviews over the years that he dreamed of filming the story of Victor Frankenstein's monster all his life.
It also became known that Del Toro signed a contract with the same Netflix for another animation project.
At the moment, about 80 films and series about Frankenstein have been shot, including a comedy with the legendary comedian duo Abbott and Costello, a parody of Mel Brooks and film for children by Tim Burton “Frankenweenie”
The latest film adaptation of the novel was released in 2015 with James McAvoy (“The Dirt”) as Victor Frankenstein. Briton Boris Karloff played the classic role of the monster, and Robert de Niro himself played Frankenstein's Beast in the 1990 film adaptation. Guillermo Del Toro".
