Government freezes subsidized Shabbat cultural events

The Ministry of Culture, headed by a Likud member Miki Zohar, froze subsidized Shabbat projects, including the Israeli Shabbat Initiative.

The Jerusalem Post reports.

The Israeli Shabbat Initiative offered free admission to a number of heritage sites, museums and cultural events across the country on Fridays and Saturdays. The project was launched in March 2021 under then Culture Minister Healy Truper.

The Zohar announced Sunday night that it had instructed its office to look into subsidized Shabbat programs and froze them in the meantime.
< br /> “The public that observe Shabbat in Israel will not be shot during my shift,” Zohar said, noting that such projects “discriminate” those who observe Shabbat.

The Minister added that the programs that fund Shabbat events “are not in line with [his] policies and maintenance of the status quo.”
