Google invests nearly $400M in ChatGPT competitor Anthropic< /p>

Google, owned by Alphabet Inc., has invested almost $400 million in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, which competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT.

An alliance between tech giant and AI startup is not surprising as the field of generative AI – a technology that can generate text and artwork in seconds – is gaining momentum.

The deal gives Google a stake in Anthropic without requiring startups to buy Google's cloud services.

Such alliances give more established companies like Microsoft and Google access to some of the most popular and cutting-edge AI systems. Startups like Anthropic, in turn, need the funding and cloud computing resources that a tech giant like Google can provide.

Anthropic's Claude helper language model hasn't been released to the public yet, but the startup said he plans to expand access to the chatbot “in the coming months”.
