France urges citizens to save water

The French government is urging fellow citizens to use water sparingly. Reason – the winter has been very dry and the summer can be difficult, writes Evropeyskaya Pravda.

President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, February 25, called for a “plan for a sober attitude to water” because “times abundance has run out.”

Ecological Transition Minister Christophe Beschu said the situation was unprecedented because after the summer drought in 2022, the water table was already very low, and February was the driest since 1959 – since “The situation is even more complicated than last year, when almost all of our departments were in a crisis situation … Now all the indicators are red,” he says.

According to the minister, it is already necessary to introduce water saving measures so that the situation does not become critical by summer. Boeschu cites experts' assessments, according to which in the coming years in France there will be 10-40% less water than the norm.

In early March, a special interdepartmental group will start working in the government, which will have to assess the risks associated with drought and heat, and propose a response plan.

The departments of Isère, Bouches-du-Rhone, Var and Pyrenees-Orientales have already limited water consumption due to lack of rainfall.
