 The former emperor of Japan was diagnosed with heart problems

Former Emperor Akihito of Japan has been diagnosed with heart failure.

Akihito, 88, was diagnosed after undergoing a heart examination at Tokyo University Hospital, Kyodo reported.

Akihito left the throne in 2019, becoming the first emperor in 200 years to abdicate. The throne was taken by his son Naruhito.

The former emperor wanted to step down due to concerns about his advanced age and deteriorating health
