Former British Ambassador imprisoned in Myanmar

Former British Ambassador to Myanmar Vicki Bowman and her husband Htein Lin have been sentenced by the country's military authorities to one year in prison.

The couple were charged with violating immigration laws, BBC reports. They were arrested last week.

Vicki Bowman first served in what was then called Burma in 1990 as a junior diplomat and then returned as an ambassador in 2002-2006. Prior to her arrest, she headed the Myanmar Responsible Business Center.

Her husband, Htein Lin, is a well-known artist and former political prisoner and a member of the All Burma Student Democratic Front, an armed resistance group.

The couple's arrest came after as the UK recently announced sanctions against military authorities in Myanmar. As noted, it is widely believed that Ms. Bowman's conviction was caused by something other than a minor violation of immigration rules.
