Nine workers from India and one from Bangladesh have died in a fire that engulfed the cramped dwellings of foreign workers in the Maldives capital, Male, the local fire department said on Thursday, adding that several more people were injured in the fire.
Ten dead bodies were recovered from the top floor of the building destroyed by the fire. The source of the fire was located in the auto repair shop on the first floor.
“We found 10 bodies”, — said a fire official, adding, “It took us about four hours to extinguish the fire.”
The Indian Mission in the Maldives responded to the incident and stated: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Male, which resulted in loss of life, including Indian citizens.
Maldivian political parties have criticized the conditions for foreign workers. Their poor living conditions became known during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the infection spread among guest workers three times faster than among local residents.
