Hai Eitan Cohen Janarocak, Turkey expert from the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security (JISS) and the Center for Middle East and African Studies. Moshe Dayana, believes that Hamas is trying to sabotage the nascent reconciliation between Israel and Turkey, as it was in 2017 when terrorists fired a rocket at Israel before the visit of the Turkish minister
This is reported by The Jerusalem Post.
The expert linked the upcoming visit of Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog to Ankara with the events unfolding in the Sheikh Jarrah district in East Jerusalem. Recently, Hamas threatened to react to the events in Sheikh Jarrah.
According to Yanarochak, like five years ago, Hamas is trying to disrupt the Israeli-Turkish reconciliation.
According to the expert, the there is a reason: if Turkey wants to dramatically improve relations with Israel, then it will have to pay some price. It is likely that this price will be, among other things, to significantly reduce Hamas operations in Turkey, if not to expel the leaders of the group from the country. In addition, any diplomatic rapprochement between Turkey and Israel will also inevitably lead Turkey, which is currently a staunch supporter of Hamas, to increase its engagement with Hamas rivals in the Palestinian Authority.
Yanarochak said that it is important to keep in mind that there are “players in the region who would not like to see Turkey and Israel together” and they will take steps to prevent this from happening.
