 Executions spike in Iran and Saudi Arabia

2021 saw an alarming increase in the number of executions, with Iran and Saudi Arabia seeing a sharp increase in the number of executions.

The group's report states that at least 579 executions were carried out in 18 countries, up 20% from the previous year.
< br /> Iran accounted for the largest part of this increase, with at least 314 executions in 2021 (up from 246 in 2020).

Saudi Arabia doubled the number of executions to 65.
< br /> According to Amnesty International, the increase in the number of executions in Saudi Arabia “began a grim trend” that continued into 2022, when 81 people were executed in a single day in March.
