 Ex-president of Maldives sentenced to 11 years for corruption

December 25, the Criminal Court of the Maldives sentenced former President Abdullah Yameen to 11 years in prison.

The former President of the Maldives was found guilty of corruption and money laundering related to receiving kickbacks ; from a private company. The court not only arrested Yamin, but also fined him $5 million.

The former president denies any wrongdoing.

Earlier, in 2019, he was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5 million for embezzlement of $1 million in public funds, which the prosecution says was obtained through a lease on resort development rights.
