Ex-Congresswoman sentenced in Brazil for organizing pastor's husband's murder

Former Brazilian congresswoman and gospel singer Flordelis dos Santos de Souza has been sentenced to 50 years and 28 days in prison for orchestrating the murder of her husband, Pastor Anderson do Carmo. According to The Guardian, the man was shot dead in 2019 in Rio de Janeiro. The 61-year-old woman and her husband were considered a powerful couple in the evangelical Christian movement. They had 55 children, most of whom were adopted. The pastor was shot at least 30 times in 2019. His wife said they were chased by armed robbers on motorcycles. In 2020, prosecutors charged her with orchestrating a murder, recruiting her to participate in a crime and attempting to disguise it as an armed robbery in order to gain control of the family's finances. She was also accused of trying to poison her husband with cyanide at least six times. The court also sentenced her biological daughter to 31 years in prison and her biological son to 33 years.
