The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) announced on Thursday that 188,200 illegal migrants crossed the external borders of the EU between January and August, the highest number since 2016 .

The number of migrants increased by 75% compared to the same period last year, FRONTEX said in a statement.

More than 32,800 people tried to cross the EU external border in August alone, which 35% more than in 2021.

The migration route through the Western Balkans continues to be the most popular with over 86,500 people trying to enter the EU from January to the end of August.

It is followed by the central Mediterranean route to Italy, along which almost 53 people tried to cross the border. 000 migrants in 2022.

More than 25,500 migrants followed the Eastern Mediterranean route to the EU.

In addition, more than 41,000 migrants tried to leave the EU by crossing the English Channel in side of the UK.
