EU horrified by Israeli police behavior at journalist's funeral

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell strongly condemned Israel after clashes between police and rioters during riots that took place during the funeral procession of journalist Shirin Abu Akla.

“We are appalled at the spectacle unearthed during a funeral procession in East Jerusalem and condemn the disproportionate use of force and disrespectful behavior by the Israeli police,” he said.

He added that “allowing a peaceful farewell and allowing the mourners to mourn peacefully without persecution or humiliation is the bare minimum of human dignity.” Borrell also reiterated the EU's call for a “thorough and independent investigation to clarify the circumstances of the death of Shirin Abu Akla”.
