Epidemic of unknown infection broke out in North Korea

North Korea reported an outbreak of an unspecified intestinal epidemic in an agricultural region on Thursday. This has further added to the strain on the isolated country as it battles chronic food shortages and another wave of COVID-19 infections.

Leader Kim Jong Un sent medicines to the western port city of Haeju on Wednesday to help patients, suffering from an “acute intestinal infection,” the state-run KCNA news agency reported, without giving a number or identifying the disease.

A spokesman for South Korea's unification ministry dealing with inter-Korean affairs said the government was monitoring the outbreak, suspecting that it could be cholera or typhoid fever.
