Well-known businessman and founder of SpaceX Elon Musk demonstrated his new invention – a mechanized “ hand '' Mechazilla, which will catch spaceships after returning from orbit.
The height of the Mechazilla 140 meters, it is located at the Starbase Cosmodrome in Texas. The rockets are currently landing vertically on floating platforms. The billionaire claims that in the near future, the steps will begin to be caught exclusively through the new turret.
As planned by the engineers, upon landing, the rocket should slow down enough to catch on a special arrow on the turret. All this makes it possible to significantly reduce the intervals between launches compared to offshore platforms.
Now the construction of the Mejazilla tower is underway. can be watched on the NASA Space Flight YouTube channel.
Recall that SpaceX has been developing the Starship spacecraft for over ten years, and has been testing prototypes over the past few years. The height of the last of them is a record 120 meters. According to the idea, the spacecraft will be used to deliver goods and people to Mars and other planets.
It is planned that next year a Japanese billionaire will fly on it on an excursion to the satellite of our planet, and later NASA wants to help Starship land astronauts on the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.
