Disaster in Nepal: black box found, rescuers looking for missing

The black box of the crashed Yeti Airlines passenger plane found in Nepal killed all passengers and crew on board. This was announced on January 16 by the representative of the Kathmandu airport Teknat Sitaula. He confirmed that rescuers working at the crash site found both the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder of the crashed Nepalese aircraft. Both recorders are in good condition and will be sent for analysis at the manufacturer's recommendation, the spokesman said.

The discovery will help authorities piece together what went wrong aboard a Yeti Airlines ATR 72 that crashed a day earlier while approaching the new Pokhara International Airport. A Yeti Airlines ATR 72 crashed into a steep gorge, shattered into pieces and caught fire with 72 people on board as it approached the central city of Pokhara on Sunday, police said.

“We have sent 63 bodies to the hospital so far, – police officer A.K. Chetri said on Monday. โ€œDue to the fog, the search was suspended. We continued searching for the missing as soon as visibility cleared”.

There were 15 foreigners on board, including five Indians, four Russians, two South Koreans and one each from Argentina, Australia, France and Ireland, Yeti spokesman Sudarshan Bartaula said. The rest were Nepalese.

Nepalese authorities have declared January 16 a day of mourning. Monday will be a public holiday to express condolences to the families of the victims of the plane crash. The country's government also instructed to create a group of five people to find out the reasons for the crash of the liner.

Local residents, who saw the moment of the crash, said that the liner was directed towards the gorge of the Seti River. So, according to their assumptions, the pilots prevented the aircraft from falling on the village where the Ramghat market is located.
