Demand for sperm freezing has sharply increased in Russia

In Russia, the demand for sperm freezing has tripled due to mobilization. This is reported by the publishing house «Fontanka» and “Big City”.

So, in the Moscow donor bank of sperm and eggs “Reprobank” during the day more than ten people come, and earlier, it is reported that only during the month about 20 people came. Avtandil Chogovadze, the head of the bank of reproductive cells, told about this.

Also in Yekaterinburg, the head of the department of assisted reproductive technologies of the medical center “UMMC-Health” Dmitry Mazurov noted that from September 22, five to six people a day began to come to the clinic for cryopreservation, although earlier the number of calls did not exceed five per month.
Doctors note that before the announcement of the mobilization, the men wanted to freeze the sperm for medical reasons. Now those who potentially fall under the draft come to the reception. “Young people understand that the risks are very big — health can be significantly damaged, and when they return, it will not work to become fathers. The risk is high: at least stress, life in uncomfortable conditions, traumatic injuries. There is also a risk that the person may not return,” — Chogovadze said.

The freezing itself will cost about ten thousand rubles, and the same amount will have to be spent on consultations, tests and storage fees, but sometimes they give discounts on it, but they do offer freezing as a gift (depending on the clinic). In this state, the storage period of sperm is unlimited, cryopreservation does not adversely affect the quality of spermatozoa and their fertilizing ability. In medical practice, cases of the birth of healthy children after more than 22 years of sperm storage are known. On average, a year of storing sperm in a clinic costs about 5,000 rubles.
By the way, doctors recorded a similar increase in the popularity of cryopreservation after the first wave of the pandemic, when rumors appeared that reproductive functions were deteriorating in those who had been ill.
