Major General of the Israel Defense Forces Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who holds the position of Chief Military Prosecutor, spoke on Monday, May 23, at the annual conference of the Israel Bar Association in Eilat. Tomer-Yerushalmi says IDF is “doing its best” to investigate the circumstances of the journalist's death.
The military prosecutor said that a criminal case was justified only if there was a suspicion of a criminal offense, but “during intense fighting, such as in Jenin, the death of a person does not automatically arouse such suspicion.”
Hours after the prosecutor's speech, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Maliki said that Palestine had referred the case of Shirin Abu Akla's death to the prosecutor's office of the International Criminal Court over the weekend .
