Most of the losses from natural disasters in the world are associated with climate change. The damage from natural disasters around the world in 2021 was $ 280 billion. At the same time, less than half of this amount was insured – about $ 120 billion.
For Germany, 2021 was a record year in terms of losses from natural disasters. German reinsurer Munich Re stated this.
At the same time, most of the damage from natural disasters – about $ 145 billion – falls on the United States. The country was hit by hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and abnormal temperatures.
In addition, the damage from the floods in Western Europe amounted to $ 54 billion. In particular, the company estimated the damage from the devastating floods in Germany in July at $ 40 billion – the highest figure in the history of Germany. Belgium and the Netherlands were also affected.
“Some of the extreme weather events may become more frequent or more severe as a result of climate change,” Munich Re said.
