Specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, presented an atypical artificial intelligence chip that is adapted to replace and expand existing sensors and processors according to the principle of operation of designer elements LEGO.
The design of the chip includes alternating layers of sensing and processing elements, as well as light emitting diodes (LEDs) that provide optical communication between the layers of the chip.
“You can add as many computational levels and sensors as you want, for example for light, pressure and even smell. We call it a reconfigurable AI chip like LEGO because it has unlimited expandability depending on the combination of layers”, – MIT engineer Jihoon Kang explained.
“As we enter the era of the Internet of Things based on sensor networks, the demand for edge computing multifunctional devices will skyrocket. Our proposed hardware architecture will ensure the high versatility of edge computing in the future,” said Jihwan Kim, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at MIT.
