Court finds Amber Heard guilty of defamation of Johnny Depp

A jury in a trial in Virginia on June 1 unanimously found actress Amber Heard guilty of denigrating the reputation of her ex-husband, actor Johnny Depp. The defamation case has been pending since April 11 and sparked a new round of discussion of domestic violence in American society.

Heard was found guilty on all counts. The jury ruled that her claims about her husband were false. The verdict was broadcast by NowThis.

The actress must pay $15 million in damages to her ex-husband. She, in turn, was awarded 2 million compensation in her counterclaim: the jury decided that Depp slandered his wife through his lawyer, the jury granted one of the three complaints of the victim.

58-year-old Depp filed a lawsuit against 36- summer Heard for an article signed by her name in The Washington Post in December 2018. From the text it followed that the actor could subject her to domestic violence. He has not been named, but the plaintiff claims that the text effectively ruined his reputation and career. He demanded compensation in the amount of $50 million from his ex-wife.

The actress filed a counterclaim. She claimed to have been subjected to “physical abuse and abuse” during her marriage. Depp previously lost a lawsuit in London against The Sun newspaper, which called him “a man who beat his wife.” The actor himself claims that he never raised a hand against women.
