Côte d'Ivoire, a country in West Africa, is proposing the return of polygamy for men.
Women's rights activists have expressed anger at the proposed bill , legalizing polygamy for men, calling it “a step back in the fight for equality.”
According to the BBC, polygamy was banned in Côte d'Ivoire as early as 1964.
< br /> The proposed bill must be considered by the Constitutional Court before it is put to a vote.
It is noted that the UN Commission on Human Rights considers the practice of polygamy discriminatory against women and calls for its eradication. Polygamy is banned in many countries around the world, but is still common in Africa.
