According to CNN, hunger in Latin America has reached unprecedented levels in the last 20 years. More than 59 million people suffer from food shortages in this region, and in 2020 alone, the number of hungry people increased by 30% at once.
The problem of hunger is most acute in Guatemala, where half of the population suffers food. The situation is similar in El Salvador and Honduras, where 47% and 46% of the population go hungry, respectively.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that, due to the spread of coronavirus infection, travel bans are being introduced, depriving citizens, especially those working unofficially, of the opportunity to commit travel. For such people, not working one day means that they will have little food the next day, the article explains.
