The cholera outbreak in Haiti is getting worse. According to the Pan American Health Organization, the number of confirmed cases has risen to over 700 and the number of cholera-related deaths has reached 161.
In addition, another 7,000 suspected cases are under investigation. PAHO Head Carissa Etienne said half a million people were at risk of contracting cholera, the BBC reported.
The cholera outbreak is particularly worrying because it comes at a time when Haiti is already suffering from a security crisis. Armed gangs control part of the capital , and fierce firefights between rival gangs led to disruptions in the delivery of food, water and fuel.
