Brazil is the world leader in the incidence of leprosy

This week, Brazil reported 17,000 cases of leprosy, also known as leprosy or Hansen's disease, in 2022, down from 18,000 cases in 2021. The famous disease is still widespread in several countries of the world, and in total more than 200,000 cases of the disease are registered worldwide every year.

Brazil ranks first in the incidence of Hansen's disease in the Americas, and the large number of patients makes it a real threat to public health. Over ten thousand patients have also been found in India and Indonesia. Thirteen other countries, mainly in Africa and East Asia, have reported more than a thousand patients each. The disease can be treated with several combination drugs, and the World Health Organization wants to eliminate it by 2030.
