Bomb explosion in Afghan school: dozens of dead and injured students

At least 17 people were killed and 26 injured in a bomb explosion at a religious school in northern Afghanistan, writes the BBC.

The explosion occurred in the city of Aibak province Samangan, about 200 km north of Kabul, when people left to pray.

According to preliminary data, most of those killed — children between the ages of 9 and 15.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the death toll could rise.

A local hospital doctor said most of the victims were school students. He added that some seriously injured patients were taken to larger hospitals in Mazar-i-Sharif, about 120 kilometers from the blast site, where they could be given better treatment.

Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Thakkur said that the Taliban security forces were investigating the attack and vowed to “identify those responsible and punish them for their actions.”
