Iranian authorities have sentenced a Belgian humanitarian worker to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes for espionage.
According to local media, the court made this decision in a closed session.
In particular, 41-year-old Olivier Vandecastile was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for espionage, 12.5 years for collaborating with hostile governments and 12.5 years for money laundering.
In addition, the Belgian was fined a million dollars and sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for smuggling foreign currency. It is not clear if the charges are related to anti-government protests.
