Beijing: former minister sentenced to death

67-year-old Fu Zhenghua has gone from being a police investigator to deputy head of China's Ministry of Public Security and Minister of Justice. According to The Associated Press, he pleaded guilty to abuse of office while serving as a minister and head of the Beijing Police in 2005 — 2021. The official tried to cover up the crimes committed by his brother and others, receiving money and property worth 117 million yuan ($16.5 million) in return.

The death sentence was suspended for two years and may be commuted to a lengthy prison term if the authorities consider that the convicted person has reformed. If the sentence is indeed reduced, Fu will receive a life sentence without parole.

Characteristically, Fu Zhenghua once conducted several high-profile investigations against corrupt politicians, including against Zhou Yongkang — member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Public Security in 2002 — 2007 Yongkang has become the highest-ranking official in New China's history to be convicted of corruption.

However, in October last year, the Central Disciplinary Commission announced that Fu himself had been investigated for “grave misconduct.” discipline and national legislation. He was removed from office, expelled from the party in March of this year, and a month later he was arrested on charges of corruption.
