Became aware of the consequences of the eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga
|The eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga called Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai and the ensuing tsunami caused great damage to the capital of the kingdom of Nukualofi.
According to Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, her government was able to contact the embassy in the city on January 16, but communication with the island was cut off. =twsrc%5Etfw[/embed]
She noted that there were no reports of casualties. Communication with some coastal areas and islands has not yet been restored. The New Zealand government expects to send troops there to monitor. It was not possible to send aircraft due to ash emissions.
In turn, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Washington is ready to provide any support to its Pacific neighbors.
