The mayor of Barcelona announced Wednesday that her city is suspending all institutional ties with Israel. In particular, twinning agreements between the Catalan city and Tel Aviv are being frozen.
In a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau wrote that the agreements will remain suspended “until the Israeli authorities an end to the systematic violation of the human rights of the people of Palestine.”
Israeli lobbyists in Spain have accused Colau of “anti-Semitism”, a common reaction to actions to hold Tel Aviv accountable.
The Palestinians, on the other hand, warmly welcomed the move.
The National Committee on Boycott and Sanctions (BNC) welcomed Colau's decision.
“Barcelona was the first city council to suspend communications with apartheid Tel Aviv in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The move is reminiscent of the historic and courageous city councils that were the first to cut ties with apartheid South Africa,” the BNC noted.
