Scientists have identified bacteria that can effectively break down nicotine. According to Xinhua, the discovery was made by researchers from Beijing, Zhejiang and Fudan Universities, as well as the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and the US National Institutes of Health. This type of bacteria called Bacteroides xylanis lives in the intestines. The study was conducted on lab mice that were exposed to the harmful addictive ingredient in tobacco. According to scientists, bacteria are able to destroy nicotine accumulated in the intestines of a smoker.
