Australia will open borders for the first time in a year and a half

Country borders are open to fully vaccinated Australian citizens and their immediate family.

Sydney Airport received the first scheduled international passenger flight in 590 days. The plane, which arrived from Los Angeles on Monday, opened a program to restore air traffic between Australia and the rest of the world, Chronicle.info reports with reference to RBC-Ukraine.

Now, according to the Australian Foreign Ministry, there are about 47 thousand citizens and permanent residents of the country received the right to enter.

The restrictions imposed by the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19 were in effect for 18 months. In accordance with them, Australians staying abroad, with rare exceptions, were not able to return to their homeland or go abroad.

A limited number of citizens and permanent residents were allowed to return from abroad with a mandatory 14-day quarantine period at the hotel at their own expense.

Since November 1, the country's borders are open to fully vaccinated Australian citizens and their immediate family, but quarantine entry is allowed only in two regions (the states of New South Wales and Victoria), and international flights are operated only through the airports of Sydney and Melbourne.

It is planned that from December 1, quarantine will also allow the Northern Territory of the country through the international airport Darwin. Foreign citizens are still prohibited from entering Australia.
