A 16-year-old girl was attacked by a shark in Australia and died from her injuries. The tragedy occurred near the city of Perth in Western Australia. The girl was water-skiing with her friends on the river Sven.
“Perhaps the girl jumped into the water to swim with the dolphins she saw nearby, — said Inspector Paul Robinson, — it is very rare to see sharks in this area. The incident was very traumatic, the girl's family is devastated.”
There are about 20 shark attacks in Australia every year, most of them in Western Australia and New South Wales. Two fatal attacks were recorded in 2020, in 2021 — seven.
However, shark bites are rarely fatal; according to statistics, the annual mortality rate is 0.9 — that is, less than one person per year.
