Ashdod Municipality and environmental associations are threatening legal action against the Electricity Authority and the Ministries of Environment and Energy if they allow extended operating hours for the particularly polluting units that generate electricity at the Eshkol Power Plant.
The warning letter sent to the service stated that the applicants would not stand by if decisions were made that could harm public health in Ashdod. The applicants requested a public participation procedure before making any decision.< br />
“There is no reason to pollute the environment and expose the inhabitants to serious danger and serious diseases,” — said Mayor Yechiel Lesri.
In a warning letter sent on behalf of the municipality, the Public Forum on Environmental Quality in Ashdod and the Shomeri Habit Association, through lawyers Amir Barak and Matan Garfinkel, Minister of the Environment Tamar Zandberg and Minister of Energy Karin Elharer were given an unequivocal demand to immediately stop the operation of the polluting facilities and refuse to issue permission to expand their activities.
