COGAT, which links Israel to the Palestinians, announced last Thursday that another 2,000 work permits in Israel will be added to the quota. But the decision was put on hold Saturday, hours after terrorists in Gaza fired a single rocket at the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon.
COGAT reports Defense Minister Benny Gantz has agreed to reopen the checkpoint and issuance of permits starting Sunday, “provided that calm in the area remains.”
The Ministry of Defense approved a preliminary plan to increase the number of entry permits from Gaza to 20,000, a dramatic and unprecedented increase. By mid-2021, only 7,000 Palestinians from Gaza had permission to work or trade in Israel.
