An ancient pregnant turtle was found in the excavations of Pompeii

When Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago, the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii were covered in ash. The same happened to the city's flora and fauna, including a pregnant turtle with its egg.

Archaeologists have found the remains of a 14cm reptile buried under ash and stone where it had lain for nearly two thousand years.

The tortoise was discovered during excavations in the quarters of Pompeii, which its ancient inhabitants were rebuilding after an earlier earthquake that devastated the city in 62 AD.

Experts say that the fact The fact that the turtle was found with an egg suggests that at the time of the volcanic eruption, it was trying to find some secluded place for masonry.
