 Amazon plans to create a standalone app for sports content

Amazon is working on a standalone sports app.

Sports remain one of the most popular live entertainment experiences as American audiences increasingly move from pay-TV to subscription-based TV. streaming services.

The move is likely to complement Amazon's efforts to double down on sports programming through its Prime Video service, a key channel for attracting consumers to its trading platform.

Amazon already owns the rights to streaming games, including the National Football League's Thursday Night Football franchise; and Premier League football matches in the UK to better compete with sports streaming leader Walt Disney Co.

Alphabet Inc's YouTube arm also signed a multi-year deal last week to exclusively NFL Sunday Ticket games in the US.

A release date for the sports app has not yet been announced by Amazon.
