Al Naja University closed for 2 days due to clashes between Fatah and Hamas

Al-Naja University in the Palestinian city of Nachem was closed on Tuesday for two days after an incident in which university security personnel opened fire on the Hamas student association “Kitla Islamiya” (Islamic Bloc) who protested within the walls of the university demanding political freedom of action.

During the incident, several students were injured and taken to hospitals after being sprayed with pepper spray. former PA minister Nasser a-Din Sha'ar, who came to the university as a lecturer.

Last week, the university administration prevented a press conference of students from the Islamic bloc, and 15 students and teachers were arrested or expelled.< br />
A university press release said “there are elements who insist on fomenting a crisis within the university” and Hamas issued a statement after the incident saying “it was a barbaric attack and The PA is turning higher education institutions into military installations.”

Hamas has demanded that other factions take steps to protect students, while Islamic State activists Loka said the PA's crackdown on Hamas is “similar to Israel's crackdown on believers in al-Aqsa.”
