On Friday, an airstrike was carried out in Mekella, the capital of Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, in which local media controlled by the separatist authorities blamed the federal government.

Tigray TV showed footage of the damaged buildings and injured people lying on the ground being examined by medical personnel.

The aid organization confirmed that its staff in Mekelle heard the explosion and anti-aircraft fire. .

Earlier Friday, the Ethiopian government in a statement urged Tigray citizens to stay away from military and educational facilities, saying the government intends to “take action against the armed forces.”

The airstrike was carried out days after the resumption of hostilities on the Tigray-Amhara border between the national government and forces from the Tigray region.

Both sides accuse each other of violating a four-month truce between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and the People's Liberation Tigray Front (NTF), the party that controls Tigray.
