Airbus seeks third-party investors to build Zephyr high-altitude drone
|News » Science & Technology
Airbus is seeking outside investment for its Zephyr solar-powered high-altitude drone program to accelerate technology commercialization.
The aircraft manufacturer has hired Morgan Stanley to lead the search investors. Airbus will continue to own a stake in the division, which will be renamed Aalto.
Airbus plans to use the Zephyr drones, which hover almost motionless at an altitude of 21,336 meters for several months, as a less expensive and more maneuverable alternative to conventional satellites. The drone can provide communication with mobile phones, as well as play a role in remote communications, maritime surveillance, border patrol, environmental change measurement, and monitoring the spread of wildfires and oil spills.
