Vandalism at an ancient Jewish cemetery in Germany

< p>

According to investigators, the attackers tore five tombstones out of the ground and overturned them with force. They also destroyed the track signs.

According to the police, the crime was committed on the night of September 2, 2022. Witnesses discovered the damage on Friday evening.

Investigators do not rule out a politically motivated crime. The amount of material damage has not yet been calculated. Police are investigating and looking for witnesses.

The Jewish cemetery is secluded along hiking trails in a wooded area near Heiligenstadt. There are 91 tombstones in the area surrounded by the wall. The cemetery has probably been in existence since the 17th century.

Berthold Schenck Graf von Stauffenberg bought this cemetery in 1943, which the Jewish religious community had to abandon because Jews were not allowed to own property under the Nazis. Today it is owned by the State Association of the Israeli Religious Community of Bavaria and supported by the Municipality of Heiligenstadt.
