Accident in the Suez Canal: navigation is not broken
|News » Incidents
A tanker carrying liquefied natural gas broke down in the Suez Canal on Wednesday, but traffic along one of the key waterways was not affected, George Safwat, a spokesman for the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority, said.
At the Grace Emilia vessel , flying the flag of the Bahamas, lost its rudder, and tugboats dragged it to the edge of the canal to let other ships through, Safwat said. Opened in 1869, the Suez Canal provides critical logistics for shipping oil, gas and many other cargoes. About 10% of world trade passes through the canal, which is the main source of foreign exchange for Egypt.
