A truck with 18 bodies of illegal immigrants was found in Bulgaria: a child was among the dead

In Bulgaria, the police found an abandoned truck that smuggled dozens of migrants from Afghanistan. There were 18 dead bodies in the car, including one child. They all suffocated, Borislav Sarafov, head of the National Investigative Service, told reporters.

The truck was left near the village of Lokorsko, 20 kilometers from Sofia.

The migrants illegally crossed the border into neighboring Turkey and hid in the forest for two days before being loaded into a truck near the town of Yambol in southeastern Bulgaria.

Sofia Health Minister Asen Medjidiev said that 34 migrants, including five children, were taken to Sofia hospitals, some of them in a critical but stable condition.

” Those who were locked in this truck did not have enough oxygen. They froze and haven't eaten for days”, — Mejidiyev told reporters.

Bulgarian police arrested four people after the gruesome find. According to high-ranking police officer Atanas Ilkov, one of the four detainees has already been convicted of human trafficking.

Charges will be filed as soon as sufficient evidence is collected.

Bulgaria is located on the way , through which migrants from the Middle East and Afghanistan enter the European Union.

Most of them do not stay in the country, but seek to move to the richer countries of Western Europe, often using complex smuggling networks.
