A million people gathered for the Mass of the Pope in Congo

Pope Francis celebrated one of his biggest masses in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

An estimated one million people gathered for an open-air mass at the airport Ndole during the pontiff's second six-day visit to Africa. This is reported by the BBC.

About half of the population of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are Catholics – this is the largest Catholic community in Africa.

Speaking at mass, the Pope called for peace in the Congo, declaring that the belligerents must forgive each other and grant their adversaries a “great cordial amnesty”.
