A fire rages at a chemical plant in Shanghai

A fire broke out around 04:00 Saturday at one of China's largest oil refineries and petrochemical plants. The cause of the fire that engulfed the ethylene glycol plant is still unclear.

Sinopec, the state-owned company that runs the plant in the suburbs of Jinshan, said a forklift driver was killed and another employee was injured in the fire.< br />
The Shanghai Fire Department dispatched more than 500 rescuers to the scene. State media reports that the fire has now been contained but protective burning is underway.

Sinopec said it is monitoring the impact on environment, and no damage to the surrounding aquatic environment has been recorded. The Ministry of Emergency Situations sent a group of experts to the scene.
